Ofsted Requirements For First Aid Courses

At First Aid Cardiff, we are committed to delivering the highest standards of training across all our first aid courses. Our paediatric first aid programmes are designed and delivered in full compliance with the guidelines set by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), and Ofsted.

What Are The Requirements?

What Does Ofsted Say?

First aid cover must be in place at all times when children are being cared for, whether on the childcare premises or during off-site visits and outings. It is the responsibility of the registered provider to ensure these requirements are met.

At First Aid Exeter, our two-day Paediatric First Aid course is designed for professionals working with infants and children and is also a valuable option for parents. The course is delivered in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) syllabus.

Both the one-day and two-day Paediatric First Aid courses award a paediatric first aid qualification valid for three years.

For individuals registering as childminders or home-based child carers, regulations require that the applicant holds a first aid qualification appropriate to the ages of the children in their care and the nature of the childcare provided.

For those registering as childcare providers, regulations state that at least one person caring for children on the premises must hold a first aid qualification that is suitable for the ages of the children being cared for and the type of childcare provision offered.

Criteria For A Paediatric First Aid Certificate

Standard workplace first aid certificates, while appropriate for many employment settings, do not meet the requirements for working with infants and young children.

In childcare settings where children have not yet reached puberty, carers are required to hold a paediatric first aid qualification.

Where care is provided to children who have reached puberty, an adult first aid qualification is considered appropriate.

The first aid qualification should be appropriate to the type of childcare being provided, as certain activities may require additional or specialist first aid training.

Training should be specifically designed for individuals caring for children without their parents present.

First aid certificates must be renewed every three years from the date of completion.

As the HSE no longer directly regulates the first aid training industry, responsibility now rests with employers to select a suitable provider. When choosing a training provider, employers should ensure they are competent to deliver first aid training and have appropriate quality assurance procedures in place.

Further guidance for employers on selecting a first aid training provider is available on the HSE website.
