Training Standards and Quality Assurance

First Aid Cardiff delivers all first aid training in accordance with the recommendations and guidance set by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). All courses follow current HSE guidelines and accepted standards of first aid practice. Class sizes are carefully managed to ensure effective learning and to meet the needs and abilities of all participants.

Instructor Qualifications

All instructors are highly qualified and maintain up-to-date knowledge of HSE guidance, first aid techniques, and training best practice. Each instructor brings real-life experience of first aid emergencies into the classroom, ensuring training is practical, relevant, and engaging. Further information about our instructors can be found on our About Us page.

All instructors have completed recognised first aid trainer qualifications, which include:

  • Advanced first aid training

  • A Level 3 Award (or higher) in Education and Training, enabling delivery in post-16 education settings

Some instructors also hold higher teaching qualifications, including a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education). Continuous professional development is integral to our approach, and instructors receive regular updates in line with changes to HSE guidance.

Quality Assurance

We operate a robust quality assurance framework, which is available for client inspection upon request. This includes:

  • Regular review of trainer and assessor competence

  • An ongoing in-house training and standardisation programme

  • Oversight by a designated quality assurance lead, who formally assesses trainer competence at least annually

Course Evaluation and Records

Our quality systems include:

  • Formal learner feedback collected after every course

  • A documented complaints procedure

  • Secure retention of individual learner assessment records for a minimum of three years

  • Sufficient, well-maintained training equipment to support effective learning and assessment within required contact hours

Where courses are delivered in blocks, sessions are a minimum of two hours in duration and completed within the following timeframes:

  • 3-Day First Aid at Work (FAW): within 10 weeks

  • 2-Day FAW Requalification: within 6 weeks

  • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW): within 3 weeks

Reasonable Adjustments

We are committed to inclusive training. Reasonable adjustments will be made for learners with additional learning, communication, or accessibility needs during training. However, during final (summative) assessments, all candidates must independently demonstrate the required level of first aid competence.

Course Syllabi and Contact Hours

All courses meet or exceed HSE syllabus and minimum contact hour requirements:

  • First Aid at Work (FAW):
Minimum of 18 hours face-to-face training (excluding breaks) delivered over at least three days

  • FAW Requalification:
Minimum of 12 hours face-to-face training (excluding breaks) delivered over at least two days, covering the same syllabus as the initial FAW course
